Metal Forming is a process of fabrication in which structural parts and components are created from metal sheets or tubing. In basic Metal Forming, a metal workpiece will be bent or shaped into the required geometrical shape. This is a vital part of modern industrial manufacturing, used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical machinery and more.

As a process Metal Forming has numerous advantages including a quick production rate, lending the finished product better mechanical properties and avoiding waste of raw materials. There are several types of Metal Forming processes utilized in mass production. These include bending, stretching, deep drawing and roll forming.
Bending
A flexible metal forming process, a brake press or similar type of press machine is used and the metal sheet is formed by placing it over a die block that punch-presses the material. The die does not actually punch a hole but creates a bending force that shapes the metal to the die.
Stretching
Another form of metal processing, this involves stretching and bending the workpiece simultaneously over a die to form complex or large contoured parts. This is used to shape large parts that require sizeable, accurate radius bends with smooth surfaces.
Deep Drawing
A common metal forming process, in this method the metal sheet is clamped in place over a cavity-shaped die to form hollow shaped components. The motion of the punch pushes down drawing it into the cavity. The tensile strength applied to the metal sheet is deformed to the external shape of the part.
Roll Forming
This process shapes metal as it passes through consecutive sets of rollers. When the metal is conveyed through the machine, rollers continuously form and bend the sheets or strips into a desired shape. The process is performed incrementally, gradually forming the part until the required cross-section is achieved. Roll forming generally is used for producing components with long lengths or for large production runs.
These Metal Forming processes are suitable for manufacturing large quantities of parts and components using a variety of metals and alloys. The most common ones include stainless steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, brass, and copper among other materials.
Metal Forming can be used to manufacture a wide variety of products such as tubes, pipes, metal sheets, fasteners and wire. Many of the metal objects from thumbtacks to file drawers are produced by one or more Metal Forming operations.

Industrial Metal Forming is utilized across multiple sectors, including the automotive industry, which uses metal forming for door frames and bumpers. It is also used in aerospace for engine parts, blades, and structural parts. Metal Forming also has uses for architectural purposes such as decorative molding or roof parts.
